Our parents kept reiterating how breakfast is the most important meal of the day and yet we kept skipping this meal without realising what it does for our wellbeing. Now a decade or two later, armed with first-hand experience of kids and breakfast, as a mother I have adopted a completely different stance towards breakfast. Instead of explaining how important a healthy breakfast is to my little one, I keep explaining what a heathy breakfast does to our body. Each day I highlight an aspect of breakfast that helps her understand how skipping breakfast may impact her general health in both a short and a long run.

Some of the benefit points of breakfast I highlight for her are (of course, they are simplified with examples she will understand, but here’s the gist):
* It refuels your body, gives it an energy boost to start the day
* It reduces the feeling of hunger and may decrease situations of overeating
* It improves focus, attention, concentration and memory
* It aids metabolism and helps maintain a healthy weight
* It supports brain function

As I continuously advocate healthy breakfast, my little one has one important question to ask me …. What really is a healthy breakfast?

These days most brands mention the product details on their food labels specifying the ingredients in the product, making it easier for new-age mums to make informed choices. I do feel cereals like Kellogg’s make the best breakfast option as they are naturally cholesterol free and also help integrating milk and fruits in the diet enabling a balanced approach to breakfast. A nourishing ready-to-eat cereal, Kellogg’s range is made in few simple steps along with the addition of vitamins and minerals like thiamine, riboflavin, iron, and folic acid through fortification.’

As a mom of a hyperactive six year-old, I try to get Heer to have breakfast regularly. A quick tasty option would be bowl of Kellogg’s cornflakes with milk and fruits that would give her long lasting energy to kick start her day. Cornflakes also enable me to make breakfast more colourful and interesting by adding a variety of fruits, nuts and honey. And to top it a bowl of cornflakes take less than five minutes to prepare my little one for a new day on a POSITIVE note.

A bowl of Kellogg’s Corn Flakes along with a glass of milk is not just a convenient breakfast option but also a highly nutritious one. The milk consumed can fulfil up to 51% of our daily Calcium RDA and the whole dish has become a family favourite. Not only that, being a fortified breakfast dish, the cereals are packed with essential minerals and nutrients such as B group Vitamins, Folic Acid, Fibre, Iron and more.

So as moms let’s inculcate the healthy breakfast habit in our children and start them off on the right track for a healthier and tastier lifestyle. This national nutritional month, share this blog with your loved ones who skip breakfast and ask them to #BreakTheHabit with a quick and healthy bowl of Kellogg’s cereals.

Until next time,

As I stood on the threshold of motherhood a few years ago, my mother shared with me the golden rule of parenting. She emphasised that the times have changed and parenting is no longer about hierarchies and authority but more so about relationship building through mutual trust and camaraderie. I embraced motherhood with so much hope and a sense of responsibility to treat my princess well. Over the course of a few days I realised that more than what I would teach my little princess, she was going to teach me. It was one evening as hubby and I sat sipping tea and discussing something about her that we realised that she was just like any other person just a mini; non-informed person.

Motherhood; Every Moment Is Khushi Ke Pal
A few hours after arriving into our world to make it a better place.

With each passing day, we started treating her as an equal listening to what her thoughts were on topics, what she felt about situations, how she wanted to perform a certain task and even giving her space and an 'x' amount of authority to do as she pleases. Family, friends and sometimes even guests thought that we were giving her way too much leverage to do things her own way instead of instilling in her the routine, so-called family ways of doing things. With so much criticism coming our way, we did take out some time to reflect on our way of parenting.

As new parents, we wanted to be her buddies,
learning every day as parenting we never studied.
Hoping that each moment of our little pains,
would work well and our little princess would gain.

Little by little, we gave her more authority,
encouraging her to work on things as per priority.
Oh, my little angel took all that responsibility,
and rocked all her skills to show us her versatility.

Would we really know of all the possibility,
if we had not explored and trusted her ability?
Giving her the freedom to do as her capabilities,
standing right behind ensuring our availability.

Winning every time she smiles beautiful and bright,
with her zeal and interest she will reach a new height.
Standing right next to her through every day and night,
we know the decisions we've made, have been right.

Motherhood; Every Moment Is Khushi Ke Pal
One quality that I really admire in my daughter is her determination.
Didn't give up even when she fell over repeatedly, her determination at age 2 shone through.

My daughter has been extremely sporty ever since I remember. When she was much younger, she fell down while climbing the slide in her school. She insisted we go to the building garden and headed straight for the slide. Knowing what had happened in school I wanted to put her right on top of the slide without her having to climb the slide steps but she stopped me outright. Going slowly numerous times, missing her footing more than a couple of times, and with a few bruises, she practised so hard that she sprinted up the 10 steps in a few seconds after an hour. With my heart in my mouth for most of the time, I couldn't help but feel the proudest parent on earth.

Motherhood; Every Moment Is Khushi Ke Pal
My daughter has taught me that compassion and love are the same for all.
Expressing her love for every living being, the soul is as pure as mother's love.

My little one has never been shy about expressing her love, she doesn't care who is watching or how silly it looks or even who is at the receiving end. We had gone for a holiday and she was all set for a horse ride, but when the horse refused to move and the guide struck it; she asked him not to. She lovingly caressed the horse and kissed him gently on his back. Then she asked me to put her down and went and hugged the horse's leg. I just stood there in awe, no tantrums no irritation but pure compassion and love; and above all the beauty of the moment through a parent's eye.

Motherhood; Every Moment Is Khushi Ke Pal
Princess expresses her interests and pushes hard to get closer to her dreams.
Swimming during our visit to a water park this year, as gorgeous as a mermaid.

Till a year ago, I believed that every child loves water and my daughter was no different. But after our visit to a local water park, she insisted she wanted to learn to swim. Unfortunately, she was not allowed in most of the learning schools as she was just two then. Her everyday persistence ensured I got her a private coach who agreed to teach her in our society pool and I'm so proud to say that today after a year she swims beautifully without the need of a life jacket or a float.

Motherhood; Every Moment Is Khushi Ke Pal
Giving a Thank you note on her birthday last year, as she turned 3.

As a parent, I thought I've tried to teach her so many things, but the reality is she is the one to constantly teach me new and wonderful things. On the first day of her school, I knew just how many great life lessons I've learned from my own little one and know there will be many more in years to come. Last month during the Coffee Meet in her school her class teacher asked her, "Who is your best friend?". She said, "Mom and Dad are my best friends". Beaming from ear to ear I headed home and discussed this conversation with my mother-in-law. She said it was perfect. I wondered how, and this conversation ensured I understood.

Mum    : How old a mother-father are you?
Me       : I'm thirt…
Mum    : No, no as a mother, as parents?
Me       : Since she was born… so about three and a half almost.
Mum    : And how young is princess?
Me       : Three and half..
Mum    : So you are three people who are the same age, treat each other as equals, understand each
other's needs, respect each other's opinions and above all work together to learn new things.
Who better than buddies would that make you?

A smile playing on my lips, two most important moms advocating 'Buddy Parenting' I think we're going well; we don't need any other approval for the equality and respect we bring into our parenting style.

Get closer to your children,
~ Heena

The most sensible people follow the unwritten golden rule to breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dine like a pauper. But me I am the exact opposite.

And no it’s not because I don’t know, it’s because my body is now accustomed to the unfit routine. With my mornings so chaotic, breakfast is the last thing on my mind. In between chores, preparing lunch and getting the household ready for the day I barely have time to breathe, forget about sitting by the table sipping tea and eating breakfast. Sometimes at best I grab a paratha or a sandwich and on the go take bites to sustain my hunger pangs. Oh yes, my body does call out for its share of nutrition and well being.

However now this needs to change.

Days on which I sit and indulge in some quality time with my breakfast I feel refreshed and energetic. I cannot overlook the importance of amazing nutrients like calcium, iron, vitamin B and fibre I get from the delicious spread. I can clearly see the difference in myself.

And I’m going to initiate that change today as I’m heading to the Gupta family for breakfast. What else, they have over a hundred mouthwatering recipes, to pick from for your perfect breakfast on any occasion. You can see them here...

I’m headed to check out what I’d love to try to whip it up too.

Those are some great recipes and I would love to try them. However I’m going to leave the regular Kellogg’s and fruit with milk for later when I’m too bored in the kitchen as they are simple to make. And I’m going to try some out of the way recipes to indulge in my oh-so-interested-in-cooking phase.
I’m so enamored with these recipes and have set the breakfast menu for the next few days:

Every Day Breakfast Recipes Fit For A King
Cornflake Coconut Ladoos; ladoos filled with goodness for you to gobble.

Every Day Breakfast Recipes Fit For A King
Cornflake Popcorn Clusters; bursts of joy, power-packed with health.

Every Day Breakfast Recipes Fit For A King
Apple Cinnamon Cornflakes: Cinnamon breakfast filled with the goodness of apples.

Isn’t that fun, easy and so very tasty? Oh yes. Cannot wait to try these.

And for those who still are lazing around, indulging in breakfast has long term benefits and can help reduce obesity, high blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes. Apart from the health benefits, breakfast is a perfect opportunity to start the day together as a family and connect with each other before jumping into your day-to-day activities.

Do I agree? Yes I do.

What about you?
