A few days ago I read an article in a national daily about the epidemic of Protein Deficiency that's gripping Indians, especially those who follow vegetarian diets. The Indian Dietetic Association (IDA) claims that almost 85% vegetarians are protein deficient, and only about one-third of those people actually know about the lack of protein in their diets. And this is true for both adults as well as children. The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has recently started educating doctors about the importance of protein in terms of quality and quantity in the daily food intake.

As I read the article a chord stuck and I realised how unaware I was about the ideal protein requirement and the role of protein in the development of young children and adults. And hence I started to research all about a balanced diet, more so about protein and I'm glad to share some crucial aspects of it with you.

Protein
There are three macronutrients essential for the human body to sustain life namely protein, fats and carbohydrates. Protein is one powerful nutrient that is present in every living cell of the body.

Role of Protein
Protein plays a major role in many bodily functions, including building bones, muscles, cartilage and skin; producing blood, enzymes and hormones and repairing body tissue. 20 amino acids make up protein that is needed by the body, of which only 11 are produced within the body while 9 must be supplemented by food. However, the additional protein that is required cannot be stored within the body and hence it is to be consumed on a daily basis.

Amount of Protein
The Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for protein content for an individual is one gram of protein per kilogram of body weight to meet the basic nutritional requirements. You can use an online calculator to calculate the recommended daily intake as per your age, body type and lifestyle. Experts also emphasise that protein requirement in infants and children are usually higher than normal.

Effects of Protein Deficiency
Protein Deficiency is the state when your protein intake is unable to meet your body's requirements. Protein deficiency over a long period of time causes numerous side effects for individuals, especially children. Insufficient protein reduces body mass, thereby affecting muscle strength and function causing weakness and cramping. It also adversely affects the immune system, making it difficult to fight infections and prolongs the healing process.

Sources of Protein
The best sources of high-quality protein are meats, fish, eggs and dairy products, which have all the essential amino acids that the body needs. Some vegetables and fruits also punch in a fairly high level of protein while dairy products provide the necessary amount of protein.

However as a vegetarian, I find it very challenging to supplement the daily requirement of dietary protein for my children and so while looking for alternative sources of protein I came across a study by the Harvard School of Public Health, which pegged soy protein as a rich source of plant-based protein that has health benefits similar to protein from meat, fish, eggs and cow milk. Soy is regarded as a rich protein source on the basis of its Protein Digestibility-Corrected Amino Acid Score, making it a well-digested source with all the essential amino acids present to support growth and development. The importance of protein cannot be overstated and as a mother, with young children, I have to ensure that I provide a balanced nutritious diet for my little ones to aid their healthy and progressive growth journey, and for that, I’m trusting Soy Protein to do wonders for my cherubs.

What about you? Let me know in the comments how you ensure a balanced diet for your precious ones.

Until next time,
~ Heena

Dressing up for the festive season becomes a chore when you can't decide what to wear. Sometimes putting together an Indian outfit that helps you stand out takes no effort at all if you know what to pick. Of course for the uninitiated, it could be a tedious task but I rely on my salwar suits to help me sail through the numerous festive celebrations. Though there is a wide variety of salwar suit styles to pick from, the trick is to pick the styles that work best for your body type.

Anarkali Suits
The latest trend that has reemerged after decades is the Anarkali style that practically works for everyone and is easy to style. The long flowing silhouette is a flattering style that hugs the upper body while the flare accentuates the lower body. Alter the length as per your body type and pick dark shades and flowy fabrics for maximum effect.

Straight Suits
A closet staple, a classic long straight kameez and slender churidar can never look wrong on any woman. However, it is important to pick a fit that is comfortable and hugs the right curves while accentuating your body. Straight suits work best for tall women, however, due to the length and sharp straight cut, it looks smart and sassy on a short woman too.

Patiala Suits
A fun suit made popular by the cinema, a Patiala suit is perfect for every body type. The short kameez allows the gorgeous silhouette of the Patiala to shine through and add character to the overall look. Patiala suits look best in flowy fabrics, dark colours and printed bottoms, that add a Punjabi tadka to your style.

Palazzo Suits
Again a trend that has come back in a good way to offer a wonderful option to those who love the salwar suits but are bored of the routine styles. The broad pant style bottom offers a vivid flare and design that can spruce up a straight line kurti. Palazzo suits work best for medium built women with broad shoulders and decent height.

Dhoti Suits
The dhoti style adds a fun element to the contemporary salwar and transforms a regular suit into a fashion-forward outfit. The multiple pleats that are typical to the dhoti style will be complementary to women who are small built and leaner in shape. Dhoti suits like Patialas should be paired with shorter kurtis to add an edge to the ensemble.
Slit Suits
The best way to add some sassiness to a salwar suit is to opt for a front centre or front side tall slits. This style is borrowed from the western long dress that allows a woman to show her gorgeous legs. Slit suits look best in stiff fabrics that without a doubt portrays a fashionable approach to ethnic wear.

Owning a salwar suit is much like owning a pair of denim, and the more you wear different styles you will want to experiment with them. Numerous online stores to offer amazing designs and styles to choose from depending upon the occasion and budget. So do not let any excuse hold your fashion choices this season, get creative and flaunt styles that you may not have worn before.

Until next time,

In India, entertainment means only two things - Cricket and Cinema. Indian cinema dates all the way back to 1913 with the silent film Raja Harishchandra, the first-ever Indian feature film produced by Dadasaheb Phalke. Over the past hundred years, numerous facets of Indian cinema have evolved and how. The largest and most evident transformation in films have been that for the heroine, the lead actress has gone from feeble to fabulous and fearless. In early cinema, the heroine was restricted to being a perfect woman, who never looked beyond her family especially her husband and was restricted to the home and kitchen. However, today the leading actresses are playing complex challenging roles to reflect the woman of today.

One such actress who is taking risks with her roles is Kareena Kapoor Khan who entered the industry when she was just 20 years old. She made her debut in 2000 with Refugee and played Nazneen Ahmed with a beautiful mix of confidence and innocence to instantly become India’s sweetheart and win a Filmfare Award for the Most Sensational Debut. 18 years on, she is still considered one of the most prolific and charismatic actresses of our times with a career that has a beautiful mix of roles. Here’s looking at some of her most sensational and path-breaking roles:

Veere Di Wedding (2018)
Synopsis: Four girls on their way to find true love discover that friendship this strong has its consequences.
As Kalindi in Veere Di Wedding, Kareena plays a woman from a broken home who is in two minds about tying the knot with her boyfriend. She convincingly plays the woman who follows her heart, regardless of the consequences of her decisions and backs herself with grace. Audiences will remember this role of a badass woman who knows what she wants and isn’t afraid to voice her decisions. She effortlessly anchors the entire movie beautifully.

Ki & Ka (2016)
Synopsis: A young, married couple whose relationship challenges the gender roles placed upon women and men in Indian society.
Only Kareena could have pulled off the role of Kia. She represented the character of every ambitious woman who works hard to survive the ups and downs of their personal and professional lives. Also to play a love interest to a younger man is a challenge she took up and executed very well. She is very convincing in her role as a woman of today who wants a career and a personal life but wants to keep motherhood at bay, which a lot of actresses would shield away from.

Jab We Met (2007)
Synopsis: A depressed wealthy businessman finds his life changing after he meets a spunky and care-free young woman.
As Geet in Jab We Met, Kareena wins hearts while portraying the transition of a bubbly, fearless, madly in love girl to a jilted in love, lonely girl with amazing clarity and elan. The film belongs to Kareena who pitches in the most memorable performance of her career and gives an entirely new meaning and treatment to the boy-meets-girl story. Audiences will remember her spunk and her fun-loving attitude in the film for which she bagged the maximum Best Actress Awards that year.

Omkara (2006)
Synopsis: A politically-minded enforcer's misguided trust in his lieutenant leads him to suspect his wife of infidelity in this adaptation of Shakespeare's 'Othello'.
As Dolly in Omkara, Kareena went de-glam with a no-makeup look that put the spotlight on her brilliant performance. A simple village girl who was rebellious in love, and went to the extreme to be with the man she loved, portrayed her vulnerability and innocence beautifully. The wedding night scene is still etched in the minds of the audiences and the sheer surprise reflected in her eyes in that scene is still remembered.

Chameli (2004)
Synopsis: On a rainy night, when an investment banker's car breaks down in the red light district, he takes shelter where he meets and later befriends a prostitute.
In Chameli, there is no trace of Kareena. There is only Chameli - a prostitute with her gaudy makeup, tacky clothes and vulgar language. Kareena stepped out of her comfort zone to play a low-class street hooker waiting in the shadows to entice lonely men with aplomb. The film offered audiences a glimpse of what Kareena was capable of as an actress, earning her a special award at the 2004 Filmfare awards.

If you have any more suggestions to add to this list, do mention those in the comments.

The wedding season has just begun and 'Save The Date' cards have started to arrive. With the number of destination wedding invites this year, I'm beginning to think about getting remarried at a beautiful destination. Of course, I would do a lot of things differently this time around should I end up renewing my vows, first of which would be to find a platform like WedMeGood where I can find genuine and professional wedding vendors available in destination wedding city. The one thing that makes me excited about a destination wedding is a selective close-knit group of invitees, all bundled up in one place for a few days having the time of their lives.

Having said that planning a destination wedding is no cake-walk, then there is dire need to find contacts of the vendors, their portfolio and their reviews to find the best out of them. On WedMeGood, you can find best wedding venues in your destination city and once your venue is booked, you can find photographers, makeup artists, mehendi artists and more with a single click. Awesome, isnt it?  Download the WedMeGood App today. I will definitely leave all the implementation to the experts but I sure would want to choose the destination in which I’d want to say ‘I Do’.

Ever since I’ve started thinking about wedding destinations, I’ve been dreaming of clear skies, crystal waters, land expanse and much more. Here’s taking a look at 5 cities in India that would provide a perfect backdrop for your special day.

Calangute, Goa
Goa is by far the most popular places in India for destination weddings with its perfect mix of blue and green. Couples can opt for either casual or exotic weddings, and they will even be spoilt for choice between a beach wedding, a garden wedding, a fort wedding and a church wedding.

Udaipur, Rajasthan
Anyone who wants to feel like royalty on their wedding day can choose any place in Rajasthan for their wedding. However pegged as the ‘Venice of the East’, Udaipur is the place to consider for a gorgeous palace wedding for its finest cultural and natural beauty to create a romantic landscape for the day.

Kumarakom, Kerala
Kerela, known as ‘God’s Own Country’ offers diverse venue options from a beachfront to tea gardens to gorgeous waterfalls. If you are thinking about tying the knot amidst serenity, then look no further than Kumarakom that offers striking views for each ceremony that will remain etched in memories forever.

Agra, Uttar Pradesh
Weddings are all about romance and what better place for romance than Agra with Taj Mahal, the symbol of eternal love. Take your wedding vows in mughali style at the historical place, against the majestic backdrop and enamoured by the culture, to create memories for a lifetime.

Hampi, Karnataka
Hampi is the perfect wedding venue for that offbeat couple who likes being enamoured with heritage and history. Weddings at the famous ruined temple complexes by the shores of River Tungabhadra makes for a unique experience not only fair the couple but also for the guest.

So which of these destinations would you choose for your wedding? Or is your mind set on another location altogether? Let me know in the comments below.

Often, some of the smallest things and decisions untaken by us have the most significant impact on our future. Even though a talent hunt exam might seem insignificant initially, it can entirely change your child’s future for the best.

How a Talent Hunt Examination Prepares Your Child for The Future

Appearing in a talent hunt exam is a great way to gauge performance and align interests of your child for the future. Talent hunt exams also provide scholarships to meritorious students – making these exams highly regarded. Most talent hunt examinations are skill-based assessments based on the syllabus directed by central boards such as CBSE and ICSE. For instance, talent hunt exam such as ANTHE – conducted by Aakash Institute is a gateway to JEE and NEET preparation through their coaching classes. Any student from class 8th onwards can appear for ANTHE and begin their preparation for admission in the top engineering and medical colleges in the country. Aakash Institute offers up to 100% scholarship for their coaching classes.

So, appearing in talent hunt examinations and grabbing a scholarship is the perfect way for your child to spearhead their future. Let’s take a look at how a talent hunt examination will help your child:

Helps Your Child To Focus
Once your child appears in a talent hunt examination and wins a scholarship, many different avenues will line up for them. Earning a scholarship will instil a sense of achievement in your child which is crucial for their growth in the future. When your child realises their potential, they will be more focused to do better and give their best.

Winning a scholarship by appearing in talent hunt examination also boosts confidence and equipping your child to take on future challenges.

Benefits Their Career
If your child is academically meritorious, appearing in a talent hunt examination and winning a scholarship will put their career on the forefront. They will be given a chance to prepare for the toughest entrance exams like JEE and NEET without any financial liability. Furthermore, adding such academic feats on the resume helps in the future when your child will be applying for jobs in the best organisations around the world. A mention of scholarship on the resume stands out in both university and job applications.

Makes Them Realize Their Personal Goals
Students who are serious about studies often take talent hunt examination as a challenge and a goal they want to achieve. Since their priorities are lined up, they are selective about how they spend their time. They have a greater focus on studies and getting things done. If your child has a bent towards science, winning a scholarship through talent hunt exam like ANTHE can be a tremendous personal achievement for them.

Way to Connect with Other Meritorious Students
Students who earn a scholarship through a talent hunt exam are already aware that they are a part of the cream. The scholarship further enhances their career and brings them into the limelight where they can connect with other meritorious students. Exams like NEET and JEE are highly competitive, and your child needs to foster that state of mind. When your child is connected with other meritorious students at the coaching classes, they will perform better because of the competitive environment.

Financial Benefit
Most talent hunt examinations provide scholarships to meritorious students. If your child performs well in exams like ANTHE, they will be provided with up to 100% scholarship to prepare for JEE or NEET. When your child is aware that the coaching classes are paid off by a scholarship, it will lift off any burden. In such a situation, your child will only have to concern themselves with studies. The money saved can be used for college education in the future.

A Scholarship Will Motivate Your Child
If your child lacks motivation but is extraordinary at studies, a scholarship can be the ultimate motivator. It will boost their willpower and motivate them to showcase their best talent. By consistently being in a state of motivation to achieve better, they will shape their future self.

There is no doubt that building a career depends on many factors. However, providing the best opportunities for your children lies in your hands. A talent hunt examination can be an eye-opener for your child. ANTHE is the most popular talent hunt examination that provides up to 100% scholarships. Scoring good in ANTHE will bring your child closer to their medical or engineering dream.

So now that you understand the impact a scholarship can make on your child’s future, it is time to fill forms and give them the best.
