When I travel with family; especially my young kids, there are so many things that become necessary to carry. Most recently when we flew via one of the Mumbai to Bangalore flights for a family wedding, I was almost certain that we were way beyond our baggage allowance, due to the number of things I carried for the kids. Their baggage was twice as much as ours with additional clothing, bath and skincare products, games and toys, personal bedding, baby food, stroller, etc. However, luckily we just hit a couple of kilograms over the quota and the airline graciously let us through without an additional payment.

It was only on our way back on a Bangalore to Mumbai flight that I got thinking about the amenities that a hotel can provide to reduce the baggage burden on guests. I’ve been to numerous beautiful hotels and resorts and enjoyed their free shuttle service, free Wi-Fi, complimentary breakfast, etc. but never inquired about any specific child-centric amenities offered. Travelling with kids is an extremely different kind of experience, where extra attention needs to be given to their comfort and safety; and if this aspect is covered by a hotel, it will definitely be a bonus to parents. So the next time, when I’ll be booking a hotel or resort I am sure to be asking about some of the facilities that will not only help me enjoy my stay but also ensure my baggage is within the airline allowance limit.

Equipment Lending
With the amount of baby-gear moms travel with, equipment lending will definitely be a huge pull that will draw in families to a hotel. Simple but important things like strollers, cribs, baby monitors, nightlights, bottle sterilizers and warmers, bathtubs, etc. could be offered via a baby concierge service, upon request.

In-Room Entertainment
Kids tend to bored easily and when on a holiday, moms do not want to spend their time entertaining the little ones. That makes in-room entertainment a much-needed amenity that parents look for. Apart from kids-friendly television channels, a gaming console, indoor camping tents with sleeping bags, etc. make for some interesting options.

Queen Size Beds
As a family shares a hotel room, they tend to share the bed as well; and unfortunately, most hotels offer only a double bed which does not allow for a good night’s sleep. A hotel that would offer queen-sized beds, additional toddler beds, infant cribs will definitely put moms at peace and the hotel on family priority lists.

Kid-Friendly Food
Of course, every hotel offers an elaborate breakfast spread, mouthwatering food at their numerous restaurants but kids are known to be fussy eaters. Moms would love having kid-friendly food-items that are versatile, low on sugar-salt-spice to ensure that kids never go to bed hungry nor the family has to step out of the hotel to eat outside.

In-Room Electronics
Some hotels offer regular electronic items including a mini-fridge, ironing board, hairdryer, etc. But for moms, the one electronic item that is a deal maker is a microwave that allows them to warm up milk, and sometimes cook or heat up a quick snack for the little monsters on demand at odd hours of the day.

If these amenities are provided by a hotel, my holiday with my kids will be a lasting memory and not a stressful getaway. How about you, what amenities do you look for while booking a hotel?

Until next time,

Last year as we started organising things to ring in #PrincessHeer's 6th birthday, she dropped a bomb on us. She didn’t want a birthday party, she wanted a birthday holiday. With less than a weeks to go, it seemed like an impossible task to pull off. As I tied to coax her, DH was making silent plans to take his little mermaid off on a beach holiday. I was miffed when I got to know that instead of a domestic destination, we were heading to Thailand, one of the few countries that offer a Visa-on-Arrival for Indian Passport holders. I began calculating our finances when DH mentioned that I need not worry and if required we could get a quick personal loan to cover the trip expenses that would not change our set investment plans.

However even though I was a bit apprehensive because of the reputation Thailand enjoys, I couldn't do anything except throw caution to the wind, pack our bags and head out. I was pleasantly surprised as DH chalked out the travel plans, there are so many things for children to enjoy and experience in Thailand apart from beautiful and scenic beaches. Here is a low down of some of the major attractions that could keep the children engrossed while parents can relax alongside or revisit their childhoods.

Can Thailand Be A Fun Trip For Little Kids? 3-Day Itinerary For Thailand
Damnoen Saduak Floating Market, Bangkok
Damnoen Saduak Floating Market is one of the largest and most popular floating markets in Bangkok. Sellers arrive at dawn in boats laden with tropical fruits, flowers and other fresh produce, artefacts and souvenirs; creating a colourful inviting scene. The best time to experience the market is early morning when it is the busiest, in a long-tail boat to sight-see and shop. It is a blessing that sellers accept both cash and credit cards.

Ripleys Believe It or Not, Pattaya
Ripley's, the world-famous walk-through museum, offers visitors seven attractions to choose from. It houses more than 300 unique artefacts creating a balanced spectacle between strange, shocking, and beautiful. Visitors can get a fright at two haunted attractions, or meet their favorite stars at the waxwork museum or struggle to find their way out of the mirror maze, and escape the laser challenge to get a unique cinema experience all under one roof.

Teddy Bear Museum, Pattaya
The Teddy Bear Museum is the first and only museum that has over 2000 teddy bears in various shapes and sizes to hold and hug. Divided into twelve concept zones that enable children to unwind and relax, the temperature, light and sound within each zone make it a different world to experience with special shows on the weekends.

Can Thailand Be A Fun Trip For Little Kids? 3-Day Itinerary For Thailand
Phi Phi Island, Krabi
The Phi Phi group of islands consist of four islands that remain a ‘must-see’ in Krabi. Touted as ‘the jewels of the Andaman Sea’, the Phi Islands is a day trip in standard speedboats. The islands are worth visiting for the incredible shifting landscapes, myriad hues of the water and the pristine white sand.

Can Thailand Be A Fun Trip For Little Kids? 3-Day Itinerary For Thailand
Chang Chui Plane Night Market, Bangkok
The Chang Chui Plane Night Market is taking the Bangkok night markets to new heights with the huge shell of an Airbus at the center of it. Visitors will find the best of shopping and dining, and for those who are a little more into experimentation, there is a huge ground around where one can explore sculptures and urban art pieces.

#PrincessHeer did enjoy all of this and much more. And she has decided she wants a birthday holiday every year, instead of a party. What about you? Any of your kids ever made unreasonable demands that made some wonderful memories?

As a mom, I put in a lot of thought and research into everything I use for my kids. But earlier that wasn’t the case, and over a period of time, I started carefully looking at the product ingredient list. I was appalled at the number of harmful chemicals used in various products we consume daily, including baby products. Parenting means putting a little one’s needs before your own. It also is realising that an infant is way more delicate and sensitive than an adult and thus as parents, it is our responsibility to use products that are natural and organic without any side effects or in the least alcohol and parabens free and dermatologically tested.

One of the products that have become increasingly popular as an everyday item is baby wipes. And since wipes are used extensively each day, it is imperative to ensure that they are safe for human health and consumption. Many associations check the quality of baby products to ensure they are made as per the specifications that are laid down for production. As I’ve become a vigilant and aware consumer I want to know if every component used in the manufacturing of baby wipes does pass the set quality.

You would argue with me about the results of laboratory testing and the absence of advanced technology and equipment available to us as housewives to ascertain the quality. But fear not, there are a few simple things that I do to check the quality of the product I’m using for my precious ones. I've learnt to test baby wipes using the Patch Test and the Flame Test that provide insights about the product.

Flame Test
The Flame Test is a reliable method to check the quality of the material used for a baby wipe. During a laboratory test, a wipe is passed through numerous reactive tests to check the ingredients used in production. At home what I do is air dry a wipe and then hold it against the flame of a burning candle and the evaluate the wipe on the basis of smell and the effect. If the wipe burns into ash and there is no black hard lumping around the burnt corner, and no burnt plastic smell, then the wipe is made of natural organic products and safe to use for my little one.

Human Patch Test
The Human Patch Test is a reliable method to check the mildness and sensitivity of a baby wipe. During a laboratory test the ingredients are applied to the inner forearm of a volunteer and then the area is evaluated by a dermatologist after a specific time. At home what I do is apply a wipe on the inside of my wrist for a length of time and then evaluate the area to check for any allergens, rash, redness or reaction that is out of the ordinary. I repeat this test for at least 3-4 days before finally giving it my nod to be used for my little one.

I’ve conducted both these tests on five popular brands and was disappointed with the cheap polyester used in manufacturing three of them. While one of the brands gave me a mild rash within 2 days of the patch test, only one brand, Mother Sparsh came good during the tests. This truly makes it as good as cotton and water baby wipes available and that's what I'm going to be using for my precious ones. What about you, do you test products that you use for your kids? Is so, let me know in the comments below how do you ascertain their quality.

Until next time,

Flu on the outside seems just like the common cold, but it's not; it knocks you flat, gives you the chills, brings in the worst headache and muscle aches and fatigues you off with vomiting spells and diarrhoea. I know this because for the longest time I've suffered from bouts of flu, from mild to high, and at one time even developed a rather serious complication. That's when I got my first flu shot as a preventive measure as I was expecting Heer.

The flu is not an out-of-the-box condition, that will not touch the common man as India recorded over 10 million cases this year. A highly contagious respiratory illness, the flu spreads due to the most common actions like coughing or sneezing or touching infected surfaces. As a mother, my mantra to parenting is 'Forewarned is Forearmed' and with that aim, I headed to an interaction with two of the country's most renowned healthcare practitioners to understand how influenza affects two high-risk groups; children under the age of 5 and pregnant women.

At the Influenza Awareness seminar, Dr. Mukesh Gupta, Gynaecologist and Obstetrician and Dr. Uday Pai, Paediatrician along with celebrated actor and mother Genelia Deshmukh, busted numerous myths surrounding influenza and clarified many important points to arm all mothers against the silent health deteriorator, the flu.

One of the strongest points that were brought forward during the #MomVsFlu campaign was the importance of Samuhik Vaccination. Dr. Gupta emphasised the fact that since the flu is a highly contagious condition, it becomes imperative that not only the child but also every person who regularly comes in contact with a child should be vaccinated, including family members, caretakers and others. Another crucial point that was reiterated was the importance of being vaccinated pre-pregnancy period, when it is being planned and avoid complications arising from flu, to ensure a healthy pregnancy and a healthy baby. In case of pre-conception, the vaccine is missed, pregnant women can take the vaccine later during the pregnancy, after consulting with the doctor.

Dr.Pai brought out a very valid point that sometimes mothers are not willing to accept; that you can give your child the flu. The answer is Yes when you yourself carry it and so it is most important for mothers to be vaccinated regularly as well. For more information on influenza click here.

Genelia made some very valid arguments as a mother of two young boys. She cheered mothers to shift from being worriers to become warriors to fight all issues related to flu by understanding the condition, being aware of the precautions and last but not the least give due importance to vaccination. A step to a healthier child, she says is prevention, which is definitely better than medication later, and I couldn't agree more.

So as Moms, let us pledge to create a healthier environment for our children and encourage other mothers to become more aware of what is right for our little ones. For more information about the vaccination and reliable practitioners, go to find a doctor in your locality.

Do we have a reason now to let the flu virus win over us, let us be #MomsVsFlu.

Until next time,

A Man On A Mission, In Conversation With Abhijeet Satam

No matter what path you choose, destiny has its own plans. Technology and Entertainment are as different as chalk and cheese and yet Abhijeet Satam dared to strike a balance between the two, working closely in two diverse fields of computers and cinema.

He began his journey in the entertainment industry with a play in an intercollegiate festival, which won him the best play and best actor awards. Following the success of his maiden venture, he began a theatre production company with his college buddies and tasted commercial and professional success. The highly successful film ‘Tyre Ki Hawa’ that he directed created waves in both national and international film festivals.

With numerous highs in the entertainment field, he also attained great heights in technology by co-founding an IT firm Comcomm, where they built programming platforms for consumer markets both retail and government.

Playing a perfect juggler in real life between his creative aspirations and his professional achievements, Abhijeet is going strong with a movie lead role in the pipeline. He is looking forward to take a higher leap into the creative field while cruising through technologically. We at iCynosure got an opportunity to speak to him, here is an excerpt from our conversation.

ICynosure: From computer software to television and films, did you ever visualise this journey?
Abhijeet: Officially, I was a student of MD college and unofficially of IIT Mumbai. I used to always hang out with my techie friends to get a deeper understanding of software and tech. The love for entertainment runs in the family with my father being a popular actor. That’s the reason I think, I work closely in both the fields. While I am active on the entertainment front, I am closely working with my company teams on tech ventures, one of them being Ticketees.com which we cofounded few years back in the year 2013.

ICynosure: How did your family react to your decision to simultaneously take both your interests forward?
Abhijeet: Well, they were quite okay with it as they know that I am someone who works with a calm mind. I am not afraid of taking decisions. Also, I work with a good team, who are pretty supportive with me multitasking in both fields.

ICynosure: How did you take the first step towards your cinematic journey?
Abhijeet: It all started in the final year of college. Along with some friends who had similar interests as me, we started a theatre production company. We produced several award winning plays like Mukkam Post Bombilwadi, Sangeet Lagna Kallol, Makeup, Sakhya etc. In spite of being the youngest producers we consistently ranked at the top in terms of Maharashtra theatre circuit. Our got us few prestigious awards also. Some of the recent plays which we produced are Mr and Mrs, Strawberry, Ek Shoonya Teen and Bye bye bayko. Simultaneously, I was working as an actor and director for shorts, documentaries and feature films. One of the shorts which I directed and produced ‘Tyre Ki Hawa..’ got selected at coveted international film festivals and won awards in National level short films competitions. This was seen by several known personalities from advertising fraternity and that opened doors for me to the advertising world, and I started working as a freelance director and producer for various reputed advertising companies and brands. I also co-produced and directed the Marathi feature film Haapus, which went on to become one of the biggest box office grosser of that year. So that’s how it is.

ICynosure: Which has been the most difficult role you played and why was it tough?
Abhijeet: I guess my role in my friend’s upcoming movie Lagi Toh Chaggi was quite challenging since I was facing the camera after a 4 year break from acting. So, portraying the role of Aalap Sahastrabudhe, a simpleton from Pune was pretty challenging and fun at the same time.

ICynosure: Are you a method actor or someone who is more spontaneous?
Abhijeet: I guess a bit of both, sometimes a particular role demands spontaneity and some roles demand a more methodical way. I feel am a director’s actor so I believe in following the director’s game plan.

ICynosure: Which are three roles across the film industries that you would have loved to play?
Abhijeet: Am a total sci-fi films and video games fan so all three are from the sci-fi world. Captain Spock from Star Wars, Tony Stark and the third am thinking would be Mario from the Mario bros video game.

ICynosure: If and when the opportunity arises, would you like to venture into mainstream Bollywood?
Abhijeet: Yes, would love to do.

ICynosure: Script-Writing, Direction, Acting, you have done it all. What do you enjoy the most?
Abhijeet: I have enjoyed wearing all these hats equally.

ICynosure: What can your fans expect from you in the future?
Abhijeet: Well along with the just released Lagi Toh Chaggi, there is another film which is scheduled to release soon with Mr. Mahesh Manjrekar and another one which have just given a nod for and won’t be able to disclose details. Completely different genres and again pretty fun stuff. There would a new theatre productions, yet untitled and in pre production phases, which would be announced as things fall in the right place. On the tech front, there is lot of interesting tech stuff which we are developing, there are direct consumer platforms and also something for the government.

ICynosure: So what according to you should be the next level of tech in the field of entertainment?
Abhijeet: Tech always has been at the core of entertainment, like right from electricity to cameras to computers to internet to smart phones etc. Let’s take a small piece from the big world of entertainment; web content platforms like Netflix or Prime have as just taken off and I see bigger things are on the way like we feel virtual experiences will impact the way we binge on such content, yes lot of augmented and virtual reality stuff on its way you see.

ICynosure: Also you being a techie, are you working on somewhat same grounds?
Abhijeet: Yes kind of similar can say. We are working on few platforms which would empower digital producers and digital audiences both. Would surely talk more about this as it’s ready.

So we leave you with the trailer/stills of Abhijeet’s upcoming movie. Enjoy!

Our parents kept reiterating how breakfast is the most important meal of the day and yet we kept skipping this meal without realising what it does for our wellbeing. Now a decade or two later, armed with first-hand experience of kids and breakfast, as a mother I have adopted a completely different stance towards breakfast. Instead of explaining how important a healthy breakfast is to my little one, I keep explaining what a heathy breakfast does to our body. Each day I highlight an aspect of breakfast that helps her understand how skipping breakfast may impact her general health in both a short and a long run.

Some of the benefit points of breakfast I highlight for her are (of course, they are simplified with examples she will understand, but here’s the gist):
* It refuels your body, gives it an energy boost to start the day
* It reduces the feeling of hunger and may decrease situations of overeating
* It improves focus, attention, concentration and memory
* It aids metabolism and helps maintain a healthy weight
* It supports brain function

As I continuously advocate healthy breakfast, my little one has one important question to ask me …. What really is a healthy breakfast?

These days most brands mention the product details on their food labels specifying the ingredients in the product, making it easier for new-age mums to make informed choices. I do feel cereals like Kellogg’s make the best breakfast option as they are naturally cholesterol free and also help integrating milk and fruits in the diet enabling a balanced approach to breakfast. A nourishing ready-to-eat cereal, Kellogg’s range is made in few simple steps along with the addition of vitamins and minerals like thiamine, riboflavin, iron, and folic acid through fortification.’

As a mom of a hyperactive six year-old, I try to get Heer to have breakfast regularly. A quick tasty option would be bowl of Kellogg’s cornflakes with milk and fruits that would give her long lasting energy to kick start her day. Cornflakes also enable me to make breakfast more colourful and interesting by adding a variety of fruits, nuts and honey. And to top it a bowl of cornflakes take less than five minutes to prepare my little one for a new day on a POSITIVE note.

A bowl of Kellogg’s Corn Flakes along with a glass of milk is not just a convenient breakfast option but also a highly nutritious one. The milk consumed can fulfil up to 51% of our daily Calcium RDA and the whole dish has become a family favourite. Not only that, being a fortified breakfast dish, the cereals are packed with essential minerals and nutrients such as B group Vitamins, Folic Acid, Fibre, Iron and more.

So as moms let’s inculcate the healthy breakfast habit in our children and start them off on the right track for a healthier and tastier lifestyle. This national nutritional month, share this blog with your loved ones who skip breakfast and ask them to #BreakTheHabit with a quick and healthy bowl of Kellogg’s cereals.

Until next time,

Zika Virus was initially discovered by scientists studying yellow fever in Africa during early 1950, while the pandemic has grown exponentially only much recently. In the first half of 2015 doctors identified the zika virus as the cause of an outbreak in Brazil, affecting as many as one and a half million people. The virus is said to breed in waterlogged areas and with the monsoons in full swing, as a mother and homemaker it becomes important to know about the condition and identify the symptoms, follow the course of treatment and inculcate the preventive measures when possible.
Disease
The virus does not have any health implications and is overcome in 2-7 days with proper medication. However, in very rare cases, the virus increases the risk of Guillain-Barré syndrome, an autoimmune disease, in which the immune system attacks the myelin lining of nerve cells, resulting in widespread weakness and paralysis. Another condition caused by the virus is microcephaly, a birth defect in which a baby’s brain fails to grow to its normal size.

Causes
The virus is a mosquito-borne infection that is transmitted to people mainly through an infected Aedes aegypti mosquito. The virus can also be sexually transmitted from a person to his or her partner. It is also documented that the virus is spread from pregnant mothers to their unborn babies.

Symptoms
The virus does not produce symptoms in all those who are affected. While some people may have no symptoms at all, some may suffer from a rash while others may have a fever and headache along with joint and muscle pain and occasionally pain behind the eyes and conjunctivitis. Symptoms usually last for several days to a week.

Diagnosis
When any of the symptoms of the virus are observed, especially if someone has travelled to an affected area, it is advisable to get a blood or urine test done to ascertain if the virus is present in the body. Sometimes symptoms cannot be reliably and hence a test is important for diagnosis and managing the disease.

Treatment
As per the World Health Organisation there is no specific vaccine or medication for the virus, most healthcare providers suggest to get plenty of rest and to consume lots of fluids to prevent dehydration. Medication to bring down the fever and reduce the joint and muscle pain is recommended. Also, it is advised not to take aspirin or other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs; and mention to your healthcare provider if any other medicine is being taken.

Preventive Measures
The most important step to safeguard the family against the virus is to keep mosquitoes away as mosquito bites are the primary cause of the disease. To keep mosquitoes away spray living spaces with Goodknight indoor mosquito repellants, use outdoor mosquito repellents especially fabric roll-ons for children and use mosquito netting to cover infants in carriers, strollers, or cribs to protect them from mosquito bites.

Staying true to the proverb 'Prevention is better than Cure', we must all stay vigilant to any cases that may breed mosquitoes and take action at the first sign of any symptoms of mosquito borne diseases to ensure the health and wellness of our family and friends.

Until next time,
~ Heena
