Top 5 Myths Busted About Menstrual Cups

on May 07, 2020 / by

Women have finally made a full-switch from a cloth napkin to more conventional ways to manage their periods … and slowly we have grown accustomed to pads and tampons to accommodate as per our lifestyles. Almost all of us have picked one over the other depending upon suitability, comfort and accessibility while a few switch between the two as per the need of the hour. However recently a growing concern about apt disposal of sanitary waste has plagued the world; as it has been ascertained that menstrual products like tampons, pads, panty-liners, etc. take years to decompose due to the use of a high percentage of plastic or non-degradable material during production.

Hence the demand for a more innovative, modern yet discreet and eco-friendly alternative is sought to make lives simpler during ‘that time of the month'. Key healthcare players have changed how menstruation is now perceived and managed with a sustainable and cost-effective option - the menstrual cup.

I am not going to divulge what menstrual cups are or how to use them, because if you are here then you sure know. Let's discuss the myths that surround them and debunk them.

Myth: One size fits all
Debunk: Almost True
One size does fit most women but not everyone as each of us is different. The size to be used depends upon internal measurement and the flow. everteen® Menstrual Cup a popular brand is available in two sizes – small and large, and every woman should select the cup that is ideal for their body type and lifestyle.

Myth: Difficult to use
Debunk: False
Menstrual cups do need practice to insert and may feel a bit uncomfortable initially as they are larger than tampons, but they aren’t difficult to use. There are multiple ways to insert and most cups come with detailed instruction manuals to guide users. The best way is to try different inserting positions and then work out which works best for you.

Myth: Need to sterilise after each use
Debunk: Yes and No!
A menstrual cup does not necessarily have to be boiled every cycle, although it is highly recommended. The best and safest way to disinfect your cup is by boiling it for  8-10 minutes before and after each period or it can be washed using sterilizing tablets. It can even be washed normal, but don’t make this a habit.

Myth: Virginity will be lost
Debunk: False
Virginity is lost to a physical relationship and not to a menstrual cup. In fact, the vaginal passage is narrower for virgins as the hymen is still intact which may make it a little difficult to insert the menstruation cup in the beginning, but with practice it will become normal.

Myth: Reflow back into the uterus
Debunk: False
The is the most common myth and is totally untrue. During a menstrual cycle, blood flows into the vagina and then into the cup through the tiny hole in the cervix. It is impossible for the blood to flow back into the womb or the uterus even if you are sleeping or are upside down.

Of course, there are many other myths like difficulty to pee, infections, leakage, etc; but all of this is completely untrue. There may be a one-off case, but it isn’t universal to all users. Menstrual cups used by women to manage their periods are more safe and effective than sanitary pads and tampons, as well as less expensive.
